KONSEP AZWĀJ DAN FENOMENA LGBT DALAM PERSPEKTIF AL-QUR’AN: STUDI KOMPARATIF TAFSIR AL-MISBAH KARYA M. QURAISH SHIHAB DAN TAFSIR AL-AZHAR KARYA HAMKA

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the interpretations of M. Quraish Shihab in Tafsir Al-Misbah and HAMKA in Tafsir Al-Azhar regarding the concept of azwāj (pairs) and its correlation with the phenomenon of LGBT. This study employs a qualitative method using library research and a comparative Qur’anic exegesis approach. The findings indicate that both exegetes view the concept of azwāj as a divine principle of creation established by Allah, which serves as a foundation for understanding relationships between men and women. Quraish Shihab tends to adopt a contextual approach by considering linguistic, theological, and social aspects, whereas HAMKA places greater emphasis on a normative approach grounded in the Qur’an, hadith, and Islamic moral values. Both exegetes consider same-sex relationships to be inconsistent with the normative understanding of human beings’ innate nature (fitrah) as conceived in Islam. This study demonstrates that the differences in the exegetical approaches of these two scholars offer comparative perspectives for understanding the concept of azwāj and the phenomenon of LGBT within contemporary Qur’anic exegesis discourse.
